LAGOP: “VOTE ALERT: Melancon Opposes Ending Wall Street Bailout”
Baton Rouge – This week the U.S. House of Representatives had a vote to end the Wall Street bailout and save the taxpayers billions, but Charlie Melancon voted to keep this massive spending program intact.
U.S. House Republicans created a new program called YouCut which allows the American people to vote for a spending program that they want to see cut from the federal budget. Whichever program gets the most votes is then brought to the House for a vote. This week the American people voted to have their representatives in Washington bring to the floor legislation that would terminate the Wall Street bailouts created by the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and prohibit any additional bailouts.
“Melancon is a huge supporter of the Wall Street bailouts. He voted for them twice, adamantly defends the vote, and now votes against ending TARP and saving billions of taxpayer dollars,” said Republican Party of Louisiana Communications Director Aaron Baer. “This vote was a real opportunity to get serious about the federal deficit and out of control spending, but Melancon failed miserably. Clearly Melancon is more concerned about advancing President Obama and Speaker Pelosi’s big-government agenda than fighting for Louisiana taxpayers.”

Rep. Paulsen: “…By voting against the previous question of the day and for this week’s YouCut winner billions of dollars, tens of billions of dollars, that are now going to programs that do not work, including more taxpayer money for AIG, can be stopped…”

Rep. Biggert: “…This week Americans voted overwhelmingly throughout the YouCut initiative for this House to end TARP bailouts… I urge my colleagues to vote against the previous question [and] in doing so support today’s YouCut initiative and protect taxpayers from more bailouts that we cannot afford…”
On the ensuing vote Rep. Charlie Melancon joined Nancy Pelosi and other liberal Democrats in rejecting the YouCut proposal to eliminate TARP by voting YES to advance the Democrats agenda (Roll Call 547)
