Elect Poll – Our Regret

October 1, 2010

Baton Rouge – We had originally decided not to run this story, but upon further review we believe that it is in the best interest of the voters in the 3rd Congressional that they understand the recent poll released by Electpoll. Since it is now a matter of public interest, and that it is well known that Mr. Gannett is using words like “Libelous” toward Hunt Downer, and as cited by TheHayRide.com and again at DemocratHuntDowner.com we are publishing this story. Unfortunately, we never received that response from ElectPoll concerning Mr. Gannett’s alleged accusations against Hunt Downer, despite our being impartial in this race. Although we did not receive that release, Mr. Gannett did contact us.

When Electpoll sent out a press release stating that Jeff Landry leads Hunt Downer 65% to 35%, we posted that finding on Inside Louisiana News. We regret that decision to post that poll. Hunt Downer’s campaign sent out a press release claiming that the poll was a fake and cited that the website would not be operational until October 3rd, the day after the election.

Tonight we received this email from Allen Gannett.

I noticed you posted this statement on your site:

The story is libelous.

If I send you a statement, will you post it on top of the article? Or else you are posting malicious, unsubstantiated rumors about a private company.

Had Mr. Gannett been kinder with his words, we would have gladly posted his comments. However, we took the ending of his statement to be threatening. We began to do further research into elect poll and Allen Gannett and found that Allen Gannett is a Junior at GW University in Washington DC. Mr. Gannett appeared on Wheel of Fortune where he won $13,750 in cash and prizes. He also promoted his not for profit organization “Future Civic Leaders of America” while on Wheel Of Fortune.

On AllenGannett.com, Mr. Gannett describes himself as

“a social entrepreneur, occasional photographer, and political operative”

Mr. Gannett has received funds from the organization “Do Something” for his not for profit organization “Future Civics Leaders”. He also wrote an article advising youth on how to get grants for their not for profit organization.

Furthermore, Allen Gannett is often active in Democratic politics. Though Mr. Gannett does not appear to have a Facebook page, an organization on Facebook “New Jersey Student Democrats” lists Mr. Gannett as the contact person.

We do not know the intent of Mr. Gannett. However, given this extra information, we have decided that we will no longer post results from ElectPoll in the future. We will continue to hold our website open for politicians from all parties running for office and will be more than happy to run polls from other organizations with their permission. However, if your polling organization is not reputable, we probably will not run it. We took a chance on ElectPoll and feel that it was an error on our part. We apologize for giving ElectPoll any publicity.

    Dear Inside Louisiana Propaganda:

There is a really interesting expression that goes like this:

"You can't put toothpaste back in the tube."

You printed it and tooooooo baaaaadddd if you regret what you did. Your brains are so warped by constantly OD'ing on Kool-Aid that you printed something you now inform your readers you want to take back. That's not how it works, friends. And since you can't take it back, you are now attempting to vilify the pollster.

Typical liberals, you are. So predictable……………..

    Have a nice day!

Fair enough. However, we disagree that we are attempting to vilify the pollster. As we noted, we regret to have posted that poll but at the same time also noted we "do not know his intentions".

Thanks for your response. 'His intentions' were to present polling data he obtained through electronic means. I am not a pollster, but my understanding is that this pollster launched a brand new business model with a poll of the LA 3rd Congressional race. Further, he chose the LA 3rd because it was the last primary in the country and this race met the criteria for his business launch. I further understand neither the Landry nor the Downer camps had any knowledge whatsoever that this poll was being run until the results were released.

What I do believe is if this is truly a valid polling entity and is simply a start-up in a new business paradigm, there is nothing wrong or unusual about jumping into an election cycle as an unknown. Everybody has to start somewhere in a business launch. AND, if their poll data proves correct based on election outcome, they are off and running as pollsters who have the ability to accurately forecast! Touche!

We are not disputing the accuracy of his polling data. Where we feel we made a mistake is in posting this polling data without doing a full research on the polling company. Had we fully researched, we would have found that the website was indeed launched the same day the polling data was released. We also would have easily discovered that Mr. Gannett described himself as a "Political Operative", and is involved in Democratic organizations.

We also feel that a professional polling organization would have contacted the Hunt Downer campaign privately and would not have made these statements concerning any legal action public while the campaign is still in full force. It is not, in any way, an indication that we support either candidate, nor should this be construed to mean an endorsement or opposition of Ravi Sangisetty. We wish Mr. Gannett the best of luck in his endeavor.
