Donna Brazille On Melancon: “One of our own”

September 29, 2010

I know there are a lot of races competing for your time, attention, and dollars, so let me tell you why it’s so important to help Charlie Melancon beat David Vitter this November.

Charlie is an honest man — I’ve known Charlie and his wife Peachy for years, and it’s impossible to overstate how committed he is to the people of Louisiana.

When Hurricane Katrina hit our state, Charlie worked tirelessly to mobilize a federal response. When the BP oil spill devastated our coast, he stood on the front lines. He’s been one of our strongest advocates in Congress, and we’d be truly fortunate to have him as our senator.

If we can reach Louisiana voters and introduce them to Charlie, I know he can win. That’s why it’s important for us to make sure he has the resources he needs to get his message out over the final weeks of the campaign.

Can you contribute $5 or more to Charlie’s Louisiana First Fund today? Help him reach his grassroots fundraising goal before the September 30 deadline.

One of the many reasons I support Charlie is because of his commitment to leveling the playing field for all Louisianians. That’s why Charlie championed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a landmark bill to ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work.

This legislation was a huge step forward, and its principles were common sense. Yet David Vitter voted against it — turning his back on the women and families of Louisiana.

While votes like this show how out of touch Vitter is, Charlie’s record makes clear that he shares the values that Louisianians hold dear. He’s been a strong advocate for working families that are trying to make ends meet, and I know he’ll never stop fighting for us in the Senate.

But before we get too carried away imagining how much better things will be with Charlie in the Senate, we need to make sure he gets there. Charlie’s a great candidate, and he’s run a very strong campaign. But no campaign can win without grassroots support — and that’s where we need you.

Contribute $5 to Charlie’s Louisiana First Fund before the coming fundraising deadline — help him compete with David Vitter and spread his message to Louisiana voters.

David Vitter stands up for Wall Street, which has given him nearly $1 million since he came to the Senate. But Charlie stands up for Main Street, and that’s more important.

Charlie stood up for Main Street when he voted for equal pay. He stood up for Main Street when the oil spill devastated our coasts. And he stood up for Main Street when he opposed Vitter’s plan to spend hundreds of billions on tax giveaways that would only benefit the wealthiest 2% of Americans.

Clearly, Charlie’s had our back, and it’s important we get his. Please contribute right now to his campaign — I know he’ll be a great investment for Louisiana:
