Cao Issues Statement on Lump Sum FEMA Settlement for New Orleans Schools

August 27, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Anh “Joseph” Cao (LA-02) issued the following statement on FEMA’s decision to award the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) and the Recovery School District (RSD) a $1.8 billion lump sum settlement for Katrina-related damages:

“This is a huge step forward for our recovery. A single installment instead of a series of partial payments will let us take a broad, intergrated approach to rebuilding our school system rather than taking it one step at time in mismatched fragments. It will allow us to provide the most up-to-date classrooms and other school facilities for our children. I am pleased to have been involved in lengthy discussions with FEMA over our preference for a lump sum settlement, and I’m glad the agency saw how this approach will deliver the greatest possible benefits to New Orleans school children.”
