Fleming Comments on Appointment of Donald Berwick to Head Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services

July 7, 2010

Washington, – Congressman John Fleming, M.D. today condemned Barack Obama’s recess appointment of Dr. Donald Berwick to be Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“Is anyone surprised that President Obama has appointed, without any vote in the Senate, a man who believes that rationing is the model for America’s health care?” said Fleming.

Berwick was quoted in London on July 1, 2008 as saying that “any health care funding plan that is just, equitable, civilized and humane must, must, redistribute wealth from the richer among us to the poorer. Excellent health care is by definition redistributional.”

“President Obama has once again bypassed the people and the Senate to move forward his hand selected socialist appointees,” continued Fleming. “Liberals want to avoid any event that reopens the health care debate. They don’t want the country hearing about this selection, and they don’t want Berwick speaking at an open hearing. Now we know why. As a practicing physician for over 30 years, the thought of Dr. Berwick in this position deeply concerns me, and should concern all Medicare and Medicaid patients.”

John Fleming is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana. He is a member of the House Armed Services and Natural Resources Committees.
