Melancon: “No apologies for BP”

June 18, 2010

Dear Friend,

Unbelievable.

Today in a hearing with embattled BP CEO Tony Hayward, Congressman Joe Barton actually offered an apology to BP.

He claimed to be “ashamed” that BP had agreed to put $20 billion in an escrow account to pay claims to those who have been damaged by the oil spill.

That’s offensive. We’re dealing with one of the largest man-made disasters in our nation’s history, and tens of thousands of Louisianians are fighting for their futures after seeing their livelihoods permanently threatened by BP’s negligent actions.

BP’s negligence led to the oil disaster. Creating this fund was a necessary first step to ensure that those who have been hurt by BP’s actions will be compensated fairly.

Just moments ago, I appeared on the Situation Room on CNN to discuss Barton’s comments with host Wolf Blitzer. Click here to watch the interview:

I’ll never apologize for fighting to hold BP 100% accountable for its actions. If Rep. Barton is looking for someone to apologize to, he should apologize to the people of Louisiana for his comments.

Sincerely,

Charlie Melancon
Candidate for U.S. Senate
