Melancon: “BP CEO Testifies Tomorrow: Show Him The Pink Slip”

June 16, 2010

Dear Friend,

It’s been two weeks since I first called for BP CEO Tony Hayward to be fired. It’s just beyond me that he still has a job after everything that’s happened on his watch.

And I’m certainly not the only one who feels this way: over 6,000 of our supporters have signed on to our pink slip calling for Hayward to be fired.

Tomorrow, Hayward will be testifying before Congress, and I’m certainly looking forward to asking him a few questions.

But I’d also like to make clear the widespread disapproval of his performance — will you help by signing our pink slip right now?

Sign our pink slip for Tony Hayward — stand with over 6,000 in calling for new leadership for BP.

With the disaster still unfolding, evidence continues to mount showing how much BP’s negligence led to this disaster.

Newly released emails show that concerns were raised about the safety of the well throughout the drilling process, but BP ignored these warning signs and pressed on just to save a few bucks.

Thanks to this penny-wise, pound-foolish mentality, one of our country’s most beautiful and important regions — America’s Wetlands — is now facing devastation beyond our worst nightmares.

By keeping Tony Hayward and his $6.8 million paycheck in the CEO’s chair, BP is implicitly endorsing this sort of profits-before-people mentality. That’s unacceptable, and it’s up to us to make clear that this way of thinking has to stop.

Send a message to BP and Tony Hayward — sign our pink slip and take a stand against this negligent behavior before tomorrow’s hearing.

The bottom line is that companies like BP and the government agencies charged with regulating them have acted irresponsibly. They have cut corners, allowed laws to be broken, and disregarded the safety of their workers and the environment in a quest for ever-lower costs and ever-higher profits.

We need to do everything we can to end this destructive mindset. And I believe that the first step is holding BP accountable — and that starts at the top with Tony Hayward.

Thanks for your support,

Charlie Melancon
