Next step is to expedite dredging

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Sen. David Vitter today issued the following statement regarding the governor’s announcement that the federal government will require BP to pay for additional sand berms in the Gulf of Mexico to protect the Louisiana coast from the ongoing oil spill.

“This is very positive, if long overdue. I’m happy that the president finally heard our plea to cut through the bureaucratic red tape. The governor, Parish Presidents Nungesser and Taffaro, and I hit this very hard with him last Friday.

“Now the next challenge is getting multiple dredges here in days, not weeks. I’ll be pushing the Corps extremely hard on this,” said Vitter.

Earlier today, Vitter called on BP CEO Tony Hayward to fund all remaining, permitted segments of the emergency barrier island dredging plan so that the state of Louisiana can begin work immediately.
